Luck and misfortune in Europe

Overnight, Europe has once again moved to the centre of world events. The EU's eastern external border once again marks a civilisational frontier. Here some of the richest, happiest and most egalitarian countries in the world, there a poor, unhappy, despotic and imperialist country invading a neighbouring state with tanks. In the short term, the Russian attack seems to unite Europe. But what are the medium and long-term consequences of the Russian aggression, reminiscent of 19th century wars of conquest?

Green revolution in times of war

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it is unclear how the green transformation of the economy can continue. How should the West replace Russian oil and gas? Will we have to rely on coal and nuclear power for longer after all, or will we succeed in phasing out fossil energy in favour of renewables sooner than expected? What does this mean for the economy as a whole, and what will the effort cost individual citizens? Will it be possible to secure acceptance despite high burdens?

Small, multilingual and rich

Luxembourg and Switzerland are similar countries: both small, multilingual and rich. Yet while Switzerland is following a path of its own outside the European Union, Luxembourg has always been a poster child of European integration. Why is that? And what role has Germany played in this?

At the centre of our work is a dialogue about the future of Europe and all things European in the 21st century. We want to discuss not only political but also cultural, social, scientific, economic and technological challenges. The Europe United stage will be a hub for debates on the future of Europe.

Europeans have a talent for pessimism. And it's true that many things aren'’'t perfect. In particular, in many countries confidence in politics has fallen to worrying levels. But at the same time, the best answers to the challenges of the 21st century are often found in Europe. We just have to look! Why not learn from those who are already doing something well today? Overall, Europe can do much better.

The Europe United Society is an informal grouping of personalities from politics, business, science, culture and media from all over Europe and beyond. The society is a Swiss-Scandinavian initiative and was founded by Andrea Roman Sorg, partner of the Zurich-based Schwarzsee Limited, a boutique consultancy for editorial events.

The European Events series highlights European issues in all their facets. Leading minds exchange views on a topic, generating new perspectives and ideas. The aim is for each event in the series to be startling and new.

The Europe United Society is launching a European festival of ideas and debate. The ambition of the festival is to engage with leaders from politics, business, culture, academia and civil society to debate Europe's challenges. The festival venture EUROPEAN BLEND is supported, among others, by the Board of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. The main knowledge partner of EUROPEAN BLEND is the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich.
